Adobe is adding an AI-powered image generator to Photoshop
I want to believe that my clients don’t want fake sides added to portrait images just because it’s possible. But for removing things like fire exit signs, annoying stuff on ceilings, fire extinguishers or anything that’s made its way into your photos, this generative fill tool is WAY better. I love the masking tools within Lightroom and my prediction is that it won’t be long until this generative technology will make its way into a Lightroom update.
The official launch for these features to hit Photoshop is planned for sometime in the second half of 2023. And both the new Generative Expand and Adobe’s Generative Fill are getting support for 100+ languages with this latest beta update. If the Generative Fill button is not visible in your Photoshop installation, you must switch to the beta branch. Adobe claims that Firefly Generative Fill will be a default option in Photoshop by the end of the year. An active Adobe Creative Cloud subscription is also necessary to access this feature.
How to use ChatGPT
Users can expect improved efficiency and greater creative possibilities with these advanced artificial intelligence capabilities at their fingertips. Adobe’s Generative Fill offers an innovative way to elevate the visual appeal of your website. By following a few simple steps, you can seamlessly integrate captivating patterns and textures into your web design and enhance its overall look and feel. You can use it in numerous ways to improve your website and captivate your audience.
Whereas traditional AI focuses on decision-making and detecting patterns within pre-defined datasets, generative AI goes a step further to create new content from scratch in-line with specific prompts. The second is the same photo but with the storm clouds slightly ‘enhanced’ using the adaptive function. You cannot turn a cloudless sky into a stormy sky at the click of a mouse. AI, or artificial intelligence, has been hitting the headlines over the past year. You could almost say it has become an obsession, yet another reason to face the apocalypse.

Generated content is added on a new layer so you can edit, refine or remove any creation without damaging the original image. A picture of a beautiful, pristine beach may have been cut off early because of the unsightly dead seagull in the middle of it. Photoshop won’t think to add in said cadaver (unless, for some weird reason, you ask it to as a generative prompt). The fake content is created as a different layer, so it’s easy to nuke it if you don’t think it looks right for whatever reason. According to VentureBeat, Firefly is the only AI service that generates commercially viable, professional quality content, and is designed to be embedded directly into creators’ workflows.

Generative AI in Photoshop is now useful for more than filling in gaps. Adobe has updated the Photoshop beta with a Generative Expand feature that grows an image using AI-made content. Drag the crop tool beyond the original picture size and you can add material with or without a text prompt. This can help when an image is simply too small, of course, but Adobe also believes it can help when you want to change aspect ratios, fix a cut-off subject or otherwise touch up artwork.
How to use Adobe’s Generative Fill for your website
Simply select what you want to cut and Generative Fill will replace it with content that makes sense for the image — from a longer bookshelf to a blue sky. Adobe has also sought to avoid “abuse” of its AI tools by training Firefly on over 100 million images from its library, as well as images in the public domain where copyright has expired. The news comes as the company looks at integrating AI into its creative products, especially with Firefly, a new family creative generative model introduced in March this year. Because there are still so many unknowns, inputting personal or business information to developing systems such as ChatGPT could make you vulnerable to a data breach. Therefore, if your users are going to use generative AI platforms, mitigating controls must be put in place. Advice such as not inputting personal identifiable or sensitive information such as your company IP and outputs must be closely followed and monitored.
- But since then Adobe decided to let AI stick its grubby little fingers into photography through the latest Photoshop Beta release and something called “Generative Fill”.
- Aptly called Generative Expand, the capability, available in the beta version of Photoshop, lets users expand and resize images by clicking and dragging the Crop tool, which expands the canvas.
- Additionally, users can fine-tune these effects using intuitive sliders and controls to achieve the desired level of enhancement.
- The two photos below show the application of the Lightroom adaptive module.
The new tool is a Creative Cloud application – one of the first apps to use Adobe’s Firefly AI image generator, which launched as a beta in March. But that’s the beauty of a beta version—it’s always evolving, and Adobe is actively listening to user feedback to make it even better. Feeling inspired, I decided to add some greenery to the background to create a tranquil ambiance. I asked for a few plants and had the AI place them strategically around the extended area. Thanks to the Generative Fill AI, blending these elements into the existing scene was a breeze, I was blown away by how it looked at the light source and could place the shadows in the right places.

The intelligent algorithms can detect various elements within an image like lighting conditions, colours, and composition to make precise adjustments that result in more visually appealing outcomes. This not only simplifies the editing process genrative ai but also ensures that users achieve professional-looking results with ease. Overall, this new AI update in Photoshop Beta aims to streamline workflows by automating repetitive tasks and enhancing precision in photo editing processes.
