Adobe is adding an AI-powered image generator to Photoshop

I want to believe that my clients don’t want fake sides added to portrait images just because it’s possible. But for removing things like fire exit signs, annoying stuff on ceilings, fire extinguishers or anything that’s made its way into your photos, this generative fill tool is WAY better. I love the masking tools within Lightroom and my prediction is that it won’t be long until this generative technology will make its way into a Lightroom update.

The official launch for these features to hit Photoshop is planned for sometime in the second half of 2023. And both the new Generative Expand and Adobe’s Generative Fill are getting support for 100+ languages with this latest beta update. If the Generative Fill button is not visible in your Photoshop installation, you must switch to the beta branch. Adobe claims that Firefly Generative Fill will be a default option in Photoshop by the end of the year. An active Adobe Creative Cloud subscription is also necessary to access this feature.

Generative AI in Photoshop is now useful for more than filling in gaps. Adobe has updated the Photoshop beta with a Generative Expand feature that grows an image using AI-made content. Drag the crop tool beyond the original picture size and you can add material with or without a text prompt. This can help when an image is simply too small, of course, but Adobe also believes it can help when you want to change aspect ratios, fix a cut-off subject or otherwise touch up artwork.

But that’s the beauty of a beta version—it’s always evolving, and Adobe is actively listening to user feedback to make it even better. Feeling inspired, I decided to add some greenery to the background to create a tranquil ambiance. I asked for a few plants and had the AI place them strategically around the extended area. Thanks to the Generative Fill AI, blending these elements into the existing scene was a breeze, I was blown away by how it looked at the light source and could place the shadows in the right places.
